Quick answer

Nepali students can start a bachelors abroad straight after NEB +2 if their GPA, subject grades and English score meet each course's requirements for Nepal. Where +2 is not accepted for direct entry, a one-year international foundation programme is the standard route. India is the cheapest option and needs no visa, while the UK and Ireland cost far more but lead to post-study work.

  • UK bachelors applications go through UCAS; most courses close in late January, and Oxford, Cambridge, medicine and dentistry in mid-October.
  • Mathematics at +2 is needed for most computing, engineering and economics degrees, so Management students without it have fewer options.
  • In Ireland an honours bachelors usually takes four years and gives a longer Stamp 1G period after graduation.
  • A three-year UK degree outside London, with living costs, commonly totals well over GBP 80,000, roughly NPR 1.4 crore or more.
  • UK Student visa applicants under 18 need consent from their parents or legal guardian.

You can start a bachelors abroad straight after NEB +2 if your GPA, subject grades and English score meet the course's requirements for Nepal and your family can fund three or four years of study. If your +2 is not accepted for direct entry, a one-year foundation programme is the standard way in. India is the cheapest option and needs no visa; the UK and Ireland cost far more but lead to post-study work. Here is how they compare.

Entry requirements for NEB +2 students

Universities set requirements course by course, and many publish a Nepal page that states the minimum NEB GPA or subject grades they accept.

  • Overall grade: your NEB Class 12 GPA on the 4.0 scale. Competitive UK and Irish courses ask for noticeably higher GPAs than others, and the figure differs between universities.
  • Subject prerequisites: mathematics for computing, engineering, economics and many business degrees; biology and chemistry for medicine, pharmacy and nursing. +2 Management students without mathematics have fewer options in computing and engineering.
  • English: usually IELTS Academic around 6.0 to 6.5, or PTE or TOEFL, all available in Kathmandu. Some UK universities accept a high NEB English grade instead, so check before you book a test.
  • Personal statement and reference: required through UCAS for the UK and by many Irish universities. Ask your +2 college for a reference early.
  • A Levels: if you studied A Levels in Nepal, UK and Irish universities treat them the same as A Levels taken in the UK.

When do Nepali students need a foundation year?

An international foundation programme is a one-year course, often run by the university or a partner college on campus, that bridges the gap between +2 and the first year of a degree. Nepali students typically need one if the university does not accept NEB +2 for direct entry, if their GPA falls just short, or if they are switching from Management to a science-based subject. Some UK universities also offer integrated four-year degrees that include the foundation year.

How long the degree takes

  • UK: most bachelors in England, Wales and Northern Ireland take three years; Scottish degrees usually take four. A sandwich degree adds a placement year.
  • Ireland: ordinary bachelors take three years and honours bachelors usually four. The honours degree is the usual route to a masters and gives a longer Stamp 1G period after graduation.
  • India: many BA, BSc and BCom degrees take three years, and four-year undergraduate programmes are now offered at many universities. BTech and BE take four years, and MBBS takes five and a half years including internship. For MBBS, get the Nepal Medical Council eligibility certificate before you enrol.

How much does a whole bachelors abroad cost from Nepal?

Multiply the yearly figures by the length of the course. A three-year UK degree outside London, including living costs, commonly totals well over GBP 80,000 for international students, roughly NPR 1.4 crore or more at around NPR 180 to the pound. An Irish honours degree over four years is in a similar range. A degree in India often totals a small fraction of that, paid in Indian rupees (pegged at NPR 1.60), although private universities and professional programmes vary widely. Fees can rise each year, so check each university's fee page.

Visas and paperwork from Nepal

  • UK: a Student visa based on a CAS, funds held for 28 days, and a TB test certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic in Kathmandu. If you are under 18 when you apply, you need consent from your parents or legal guardian.
  • Ireland: an Irish study visa applied for online through AVATS and processed by the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi, then Stamp 2 after arrival. Students under 18 face additional requirements, so check irishimmigration.ie.
  • India: no visa for Nepali citizens; carry your passport or citizenship certificate.
  • All destinations: your bank will usually need a MoEST No Objection Certificate before it remits fees abroad.

Timeline from Class 11 to departure

  1. 1During Class 12: shortlist courses and note the GPA, subjects and English score each needs for Nepal.
  2. 2By the UCAS deadline: apply for UK courses (most close in late January; Oxford, Cambridge, medicine and dentistry close in mid-October), usually on predicted grades.
  3. 3Autumn to spring: apply directly to Irish universities and to Indian institutions, DASA or ICCR; deadlines vary.
  4. 4After NEB results: send your marksheet, confirm your place, get the MoEST NOC and pay the deposit.
  5. 5Summer: apply for the visa, arrange accommodation and book flights for a September start.

Bachelors abroad now or masters abroad later?

A bachelors abroad gives you more time to adapt, build a network and gain placement experience, and can lead into post-study work. It is also three or four years of international fees. A four-year bachelors in Nepal followed by a one-year masters in the UK or Ireland reaches the same post-study work routes for much less money, and you choose your specialism when you are more certain. If your family's budget is limited or you are unsure of your field, the second route is often the safer choice.

Common mistakes

  • Applying only to the best-known universities without checking whether they accept NEB +2 and your GPA.
  • Missing subject prerequisites such as mathematics, which rule out a course however good your overall GPA is.
  • Comparing the first-year fee instead of the total for the whole degree in NPR, including annual increases.
  • Accepting a foundation place without written progression terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study a bachelors in the UK after +2 from Nepal?

Yes. Many UK universities accept NEB +2 for direct entry with a strong GPA and the right subjects, and publish the requirement on a Nepal page. If your +2 is not accepted directly, you can usually enter through a one-year international foundation programme.

What GPA do I need after +2 to study abroad?

There is no single figure. Each university sets its own minimum NEB GPA, and competitive courses ask for more. Check the Nepal entry page for each course and the grade needed in subjects such as mathematics or English.

Is a foundation year worth it for Nepali students?

It is worth it when it is the only route into the degree you want, or when it guarantees progression to a strong university. It adds a full year of fees and living costs, so compare it with applying directly where your +2 is accepted.

Do I need IELTS after +2 to study abroad?

For the UK and Ireland, usually yes, or PTE or TOEFL, although some UK universities accept a high NEB English grade. Indian universities usually accept your +2 results as proof of English.
