Quick answer

To study abroad from Nepal, Nepali students should choose the course first, then the country, then the university. Ireland and the UK offer English-taught degrees, one-year masters and post-study work (Stamp 1G and the Graduate Route), with a one-year masters plus living costs often roughly NPR 45 to 80 lakh, depending on country and city. India is far cheaper and needs no visa for Nepali citizens.

  • Nepali banks normally need a MoEST No Objection Certificate before they remit tuition fees abroad.
  • UK Student visa applicants must hold the required funds for 28 consecutive days and need a TB test from an approved Kathmandu clinic.
  • Ireland's Stamp 1G allows up to one year after an honours bachelors and up to two years after a masters.
  • Nepali citizens need no visa to study in India under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship.
  • IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT all have Kathmandu test centres; most courses want around IELTS 6.0 to 6.5.

To study abroad from Nepal, decide what you want to study and why, then pick the country whose costs, visa rules and work options fit that goal, then the university. Ireland and the UK offer English-taught degrees, one-year masters and post-study work routes at a high cost (a one-year masters with living costs often comes to roughly NPR 45 to 80 lakh, depending on country and city). India is far cheaper, needs no visa for Nepali citizens and is close to home, but most graduates come back to Nepal or move on to a masters elsewhere. This guide walks through each decision in order: country, course, entry with your Nepali qualifications, costs, English tests, applications, visas and work after you graduate.

Which country should Nepali students choose?

Choose Ireland if

  • You want an English-speaking EU country with a large technology, pharmaceutical, medical devices and finance sector.
  • You are planning a one-year masters after your bachelors in Nepal and want up to two years of post-study work afterwards.
  • You prefer smaller universities and cities, and your family can plan for high rents, especially in Dublin.

Choose the UK if

  • You want the widest choice of universities and specialist courses, and a three-year bachelors or one-year masters.
  • You want the Graduate Route, which lets eligible graduates stay and work without a job offer.
  • Your family can show the required funds for 28 days before you apply, and you are willing to study outside London to keep costs down.

Choose India if

  • Total cost is your main constraint and you want a recognised degree for a fraction of Western prices, paid in Indian rupees.
  • You are aiming for engineering, technology, management, medicine or allied health programmes, where India has large, established institutions.
  • You want to stay close to home with no visa, and plan to work in Nepal or apply for a masters elsewhere afterwards.

Choose the course before the university

Nepali students who start with a university name, or with whichever course a friend chose, often end up on a programme that does not fit their career plan. Start with the job you want in five years and work backwards to the qualification that leads there.

  1. 1Write down two or three target roles and the countries, including Nepal, where you would like to do them.
  2. 2Check job adverts for those roles: which degrees, skills and certifications do employers ask for?
  3. 3Shortlist courses whose modules match those skills. Read the module list, not just the course title.
  4. 4Check each course's entry requirements for Nepal against your grades, subjects and English score.
  5. 5Only then compare universities on teaching, location, cost, employability support and placement options.

Entry requirements with Nepali qualifications

For a bachelors after +2

Universities in all three countries look at your NEB Class 12 (+2) grades, reported as letter grades and a GPA on a 4.0 scale, or at A Levels if you studied them in Nepal. Many UK universities and some Irish ones publish a Nepal entry page that converts their requirement into a minimum NEB GPA; where +2 is not accepted for direct entry, a one-year international foundation programme is the usual route in. Subjects matter too: mathematics for computing, engineering and economics, and biology and chemistry for health sciences. +2 Management students without mathematics will find many computing and engineering degrees closed to them.

For a masters after a TU, KU or PU degree

You normally need a bachelors in a related subject with a minimum grade that each university converts from Nepal's percentage or CGPA system. Four-year degrees such as BE, BIT, BSc CSIT, BCA and BBA are generally accepted. Three-year bachelors from Nepal are accepted by many UK universities and some Irish ones with good grades, but other courses want a four-year degree or extra study, so check the Nepal page for every course on your list. Some programmes, such as MBAs, also ask for work experience.

English tests from Nepal

Ireland and the UK require proof of English for most Nepali applicants. Indian universities teach most programmes in English and usually accept your +2 or bachelors results as proof, but individual institutions set their own rules.

  • Widely accepted tests: IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, all of which have test centres in Kathmandu. Book early in peak season and leave time for a retake.
  • Typical scores: around IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall for most courses, and higher (often 7.0) for law, medicine, nursing and communication-heavy programmes.
  • UK visa rule: for a degree-level course at a university, the university can assess your English itself. For courses below degree level you usually need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider.
  • Waivers: some UK universities accept a high NEB +2 English grade or an English-medium bachelors from Nepal instead of a test, but this varies by university and does not always satisfy visa officers.

How much does it cost to study abroad from Nepal?

Tuition is only part of the cost. A realistic first-year budget also covers living costs for 12 months, visa and immigration fees, health cover, flights from Kathmandu, an accommodation deposit and a buffer for your first weeks.

The NPR figures assume roughly NPR 155 to the euro and NPR 180 to the pound; the Indian rupee is pegged at NPR 1.60. Medicine, dentistry and some MBAs cost far more than these ranges. For sample budgets, see our cost comparison for Nepali students.

Funding, loans and the MoEST NOC

Most Nepali students fund their studies through family savings, education loans from Nepali banks and partial university scholarships. Full scholarships exist but are highly competitive.

  • No Objection Certificate: Nepali banks normally need a No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) before they remit tuition abroad. Apply once you have an offer letter and check the current process on the MoEST website.
  • Education loans: several Nepali commercial banks offer study-abroad loans, usually secured against property. A loan letter can support a visa application if it meets the embassy's rules.
  • University merit scholarships: the most common award in Ireland and the UK, usually a fixed amount or a percentage off tuition.
  • Government schemes: Chevening for UK masters (Nepal is an eligible country; check the current year's terms) and the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship.
  • India: ICCR and other Government of India scholarships for Nepali students, announced through the Embassy of India in Kathmandu.

How to apply from Nepal: step by step

  1. 1Twelve to eighteen months before you start: shortlist courses and countries, and check each course's Nepal entry and English requirements.
  2. 2Book IELTS, PTE or TOEFL in Kathmandu early enough to retake it if needed.
  3. 3Prepare documents: +2 and bachelors transcripts and certificates, character certificate, passport, CV, references and a statement of purpose.
  4. 4Apply: through UCAS for UK bachelors (most courses have a late-January deadline; Oxford, Cambridge, medicine and dentistry close in mid-October), directly to the university for UK and Irish masters and most Irish bachelors, and directly, through DASA or Study in India, or for an ICCR scholarship for India.
  5. 5Compare offers on total cost in NPR, scholarships, course content and outcomes, then accept one and pay any deposit after getting the MoEST NOC.
  6. 6Arrange funds and apply for the visa as soon as you have what you need (a CAS for the UK, an offer and fee receipt for Ireland). Nepali citizens going to India need no visa.
  7. 7Book accommodation and flights, and plan your first month on arrival.

Intakes and timelines

September is the main intake in Ireland and the UK, and many Indian universities start between July and September. NEB +2 results usually arrive in summer, so most bachelors applicants apply on predicted or provisional grades. Some UK and Irish universities also run a January intake, mainly for postgraduate business, computing and engineering courses, with fewer options and scholarships.

Student visas from Nepal

UK Student visa

You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed university, proof of English, and evidence that the required money (unpaid tuition plus a set monthly living amount, higher for London) has been held for at least 28 consecutive days. Nepali applicants staying more than six months also need a tuberculosis test certificate from a UKVI-approved clinic in Kathmandu. You apply online, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, then give biometrics at the visa application centre in Kathmandu. Check fees and amounts on gov.uk.

Ireland study visa and Stamp 2

Nepali citizens need an Irish study visa (a long-stay D visa). You apply online through AVATS, then submit your passport and documents through the VFS Global centre; applications are processed by the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi. You must show a full-time place on an eligible course, fees paid (or the required portion), proof of funds for living costs, private medical insurance and proof of English. After arrival you register for an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) and receive Stamp 2 permission. Check current requirements at irishimmigration.ie and on the embassy website.

India: no visa for Nepali citizens

Under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Nepali citizens do not need a visa to live or study in India. Carry your passport or citizenship certificate, and expect your institution to ask for identity documents at admission. For MBBS in India or anywhere abroad, get the Nepal Medical Council eligibility certificate before you enrol, and plan for the Council's licensing exam when you return to practise in Nepal.

Working while you study

  • Ireland: Stamp 2 students can usually work up to 20 hours a week during term and up to 40 hours a week in the official holiday periods.
  • UK: students on a degree-level course at a university can usually work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full time in official vacations. Your exact limit is printed on your visa.
  • India: Nepali citizens do not hold an Indian visa, so the work ban on the Student visa does not apply, but full-time study leaves little time and many institutions limit outside work.

Part-time work helps with living costs but will not pay international tuition, so never build your family's budget around expected earnings.

After you graduate

  • Ireland: the Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G) lets eligible graduates stay to look for work and work full time, for up to one year after an honours bachelors and up to two years after a masters. Graduates who find a qualifying job can then move to an employment permit such as the Critical Skills Employment Permit.
  • UK: the Graduate Route lets eligible graduates stay and work without a job offer. The government has announced it will be shortened, so check gov.uk for the length that applies when you graduate. Many graduates then switch to a Skilled Worker visa, which has its own salary thresholds.
  • India: Nepali graduates can work in India without a visa, though most return to Nepal or go on to a masters in another country.
  • Back in Nepal: for public service jobs and some professions you may need a foreign degree equivalence from Tribhuvan University or a licence from the relevant council.

Common mistakes Nepali students make

  • Choosing a country because friends are going there, not because it suits your course and career.
  • Budgeting for tuition only and running short on living costs in the first semester.
  • Paying a consultancy or university deposit before checking the institution is recognised.
  • Leaving the MoEST NOC, bank paperwork or the UK 28-day funds period to the last minute.
  • Assuming today's post-study work rules will be the same when you graduate.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for Nepali students: Ireland, the UK or India?

It depends on your goal and budget. The UK offers the widest choice of universities and the Graduate Route, Ireland offers a strong technology and pharmaceutical job market with up to two years of post-study work after a masters, and India offers recognised degrees at a much lower cost with no visa needed for Nepali citizens.

How much money do I need to study abroad from Nepal?

For a one-year masters in Ireland or the UK including living costs, plan for roughly EUR or GBP 30,000 to 45,000, which is roughly NPR 45 to 80 lakh depending on the city and the exchange rate. A year in India usually costs a small fraction of that.

Do Nepali students need IELTS to study abroad?

Ireland and the UK usually require IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT, all available in Kathmandu, although some UK universities accept a strong NEB English grade or an English-medium degree. Indian universities usually accept your +2 or degree results.

Do Nepali students need a visa to study in India?

No. Under the 1950 Nepal India treaty, Nepali citizens can live and study in India without a visa. You still need identity documents such as a passport or citizenship certificate for admission.

What is the MoEST NOC and do I need it?

It is a No Objection Certificate from Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Nepali banks normally require it before sending tuition fees abroad, so apply soon after you receive an offer.
