Engineering in India from Nepal: DASA, JEE and How Nepali Students Get a BTech Seat

The three routes Nepali students use to study engineering in India (JEE Advanced for IITs, DASA for NITs and IIITs, direct admission at private universities), how to pick one, and Nepal Engineering Council registration on return.

Quick answer

Nepali students can get a BTech seat in India through three routes: JEE Advanced for the IITs, DASA using JEE Main rank for NITs, IIITs and similar institutes, or direct admission at private universities such as Manipal, VIT and SRM. No Indian visa is needed. To work as an engineer in Nepal, graduates must register with the Nepal Engineering Council.

  • DASA needs a separate registration on the DASA portal; JEE Main registration alone is not enough.
  • DASA fees are quoted in USD per semester, with a SAARC concession historically applied to Nepali citizens.
  • JEE Main has had an exam centre in Kathmandu in recent cycles.
  • Order DASA choices using previous years' closing ranks, with a few ambitious choices first.
  • The Nepal Engineering Council assesses foreign degrees and has introduced a registration exam.

Nepali students can earn a BTech in India through three routes: JEE Advanced for the IITs, DASA (using JEE Main rank) for NITs, IIITs and similar institutes, or direct admission at private universities. Each uses a different exam and timeline, so decide early which one you are preparing for, and ideally keep more than one open. If you plan to work as an engineer in Nepal, also check Nepal Engineering Council registration before you choose a programme.

Route 1: IITs through JEE Advanced

Nepali citizens can register for JEE Advanced directly as foreign nationals, without qualifying through JEE Main, and are admitted to supernumerary IIT seats through JoSAA counselling. Preparation needs to start in Grade 11, because JEE Advanced tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in more depth than NEB.

Route 2: DASA for Nepali students

DASA reserves supernumerary seats for foreign nationals, including Nepali citizens, at NITs, IIITs, Schools of Planning and Architecture and other centrally funded technical institutes. In recent cycles admission has been based on JEE Main rank: you sit JEE Main, which has had a centre in Kathmandu, then register separately on the DASA portal for choice filling and counselling.

  • Eligibility usually requires Physics and Mathematics in NEB Grade 12 with a minimum aggregate set in the DASA brochure.
  • Fees are quoted in USD per semester; SAARC nationals, including Nepali citizens, have historically received a concession.
  • Seats are allotted in rounds, and you must accept and pay within each round's deadline, so have the MoEST NOC and bank process ready early.

Route 3: Direct admission at private universities

Private universities such as Manipal, VIT, SRM, Amity, Sharda and LPU admit Nepali students directly, through their own tests or on NEB results. It is the most flexible route, with more seats and specialisations, but fees are higher and quality varies between departments.

A DASA application from Nepal, step by step

  1. 1Register for JEE Main and sit at least one session; many students sit both to improve their rank.
  2. 2Download the current DASA brochure and check eligibility, participating institutes and the fee for Nepali citizens.
  3. 3Register on the DASA portal when it opens, upload your passport or citizenship certificate and NEB documents, and pay the registration fee.
  4. 4Fill institute and branch choices in order of genuine preference; the system allots the highest choice your rank allows.
  5. 5Check each round's result, accept the seat and pay within the deadline, or float for a better option if the rules allow.
  6. 6Report to the institute on the published date. No Indian visa is needed for Nepali citizens.

Worked example: ordering your DASA choices

Imagine a rank likely to get Civil or Electrical at a mid-ranked NIT, but probably not Computer Science at a top one. Listing only top-NIT Computer Science risks no allotment. A better list puts a few ambitious Computer Science choices first, then preferred branches at mid-ranked NITs and IIITs, then acceptable branches where the rank is comfortably enough. Previous years' closing ranks on the DASA site are the best guide, though they shift each year.

Preparing for JEE alongside NEB

JEE follows India's NCERT syllabus for Classes 11 and 12. NEB science covers similar topics, but JEE demands faster problem solving and deeper Mathematics, especially calculus, coordinate geometry and vectors. Work through the NCERT textbooks first, then a standard problem book per subject, and take weekly timed mocks from the start of Grade 12. Compare your mock scores with past DASA closing ranks to keep expectations realistic.

Branches that make sense for Nepal

Computer Science and Engineering is the most requested branch, followed by Electronics and Communication, Electrical, Civil and Mechanical. If you plan to return, think about demand in Nepal: Civil and Electrical are linked to infrastructure and hydropower work, while Computer Science suits remote and IT service jobs. Check current job listings rather than relying on reputation.

Nepal Engineering Council registration on return

To practise as an engineer in Nepal you need to register with the Nepal Engineering Council (NEC), which assesses foreign degrees and has introduced a registration (licence) exam. Confirm that your Indian programme is AICTE approved or offered by an institute of national importance, and check how the NEC treats that programme and branch.

Common mistakes

  • Preparing only for NEB exams and starting JEE study too late in Grade 12.
  • Missing the separate DASA registration, assuming JEE Main registration was enough.
  • Listing too few choices and ending up with no seat.
  • Choosing a private university branch without checking AICTE approval and placement data for that branch.
  • Forgetting Nepal Engineering Council rules when planning a career back home.

Who each route suits

RouteSuits
JEE AdvancedStudents with very strong Physics and Mathematics who can commit to one to two years of focused preparation
DASAGood science students who want a government institute and are prepared to sit JEE Main
Private universityStudents who want certainty of admission, a specific branch or a particular campus

Whichever route you take, keep options open until a seat is confirmed: sit JEE Main, register for DASA, apply for Embassy of India scholarships and hold a private university offer at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nepali students apply through DASA?

Yes. DASA reserves supernumerary seats for foreign nationals, including Nepali citizens, at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes. In recent cycles admission has been based on JEE Main rank.

Do Nepali students need JEE Main for IITs?

No. Nepali citizens can register for JEE Advanced directly as foreign nationals without qualifying through JEE Main.

Can Nepali students get a BTech in India without JEE?

Yes, at private universities that admit directly through their own tests or on NEB results. IITs and DASA institutes require JEE.

Is an Indian BTech valid in Nepal?

Degrees from AICTE-approved programmes and institutes of national importance are widely accepted, but to practise as an engineer you must register with the Nepal Engineering Council, which may require its registration exam.
