The UK is one of the largest destinations for Nepali students, and the reason is structural: most UK masters degrees run for twelve months rather than two years, which halves both tuition and living costs compared with a two-year programme elsewhere.
The one-year masters changes the maths
A UK masters is typically a single year. Compare like for like before you decide the UK is expensive - a higher annual tuition figure over one year is often cheaper in total than a lower figure over two, and you start earning a year sooner.
The Graduate Route
The Graduate Route lets eligible graduates stay in the UK to work, or look for work, after completing their degree - two years for bachelors and masters graduates, longer for doctoral graduates. It does not require a job offer, which is what makes it genuinely useful: you can arrive at graduation without a role lined up and still have time to find one.
What the student visa asks for
- A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor
- Proof of funds for tuition plus living costs, held for the required period
- English-language evidence, usually a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- Tuberculosis test results, which are required for applicants from Nepal
- A valid passport
The funds requirement is the one that trips people up: the money must sit in a qualifying account for a continuous period before you apply, and a balance that dips even briefly inside that window can cause a refusal. Check the current rule before you move any money.
Choosing a university
The UK has far more institutions than the handful that dominate rankings, and for most subjects the difference in graduate outcomes between a mid-table university and a famous one is smaller than the difference in cost of living between London and everywhere else. Weigh the city as seriously as the name.
