Quick answer

A UK-affiliated college in Nepal is worth it if cost matters most and you do not need UK work experience: it costs much less and usually awards the same UK degree. Studying in the UK costs far more but is the only way to qualify for the Graduate Route. Nepali students who want UK experience should study in the UK for at least a final year or a masters.

  • The Graduate Route requires a UK Student visa and an eligible course completed in the UK, so study only in Nepal does not qualify.
  • Check the college on the UK university's own partner list and ask for its current MoEST approval for the programme.
  • Lok Sewa and other public service jobs in Nepal may need a Tribhuvan University equivalence certificate for the degree.
  • Affiliated-college graduates most commonly reach the Graduate Route through a one-year masters in the UK.
  • Get the full fee for the whole degree in writing, including registration, assessment and graduation charges.

A UK degree from a partner college in Nepal costs much less and usually carries the same award as the UK campus, but it gives you no UK work rights or Graduate Route. Going to the UK costs far more, but it is the only way to qualify for the Graduate Route and gain UK work experience. If that experience is part of your plan, go to the UK for at least a final year or a masters; if it is not, a well-verified affiliated degree is often better value for a Nepali family.

How UK-affiliated degrees work

Under these arrangements, often called transnational education, a UK university validates or franchises a programme, approves the assessments, moderates marking and awards the degree. The college in Nepal teaches and runs the campus. Quality is the UK university's responsibility, and the college also needs approval from Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to run the foreign-affiliated programme.

How does the cost compare with studying in the UK?

Indicative comparison for a three-year bachelors in business or computing
RouteTuitionLiving costsUK post-study work
UK-affiliated college in NepalA fraction of UK international fees, paid in NPR; varies widely by collegeLiving at home or in KathmanduNo
Two years in Nepal, final year in the UKLower fees for two years, UK fees for the final yearNepal costs, then one year of UK costsPossible, if the UK study meets Graduate Route rules
Full degree in the UKGBP 15,000 to 30,000+ a year (roughly NPR 27 to 54 lakh)GBP 12,000 to 18,000 a year; more in LondonYes, via the Graduate Route if eligible

Ask the college for the full fee for the whole degree in writing, including registration, assessment and graduation charges, and compare it with UK international fees on the university's own website. NPR figures assume roughly NPR 180 to the pound and will move with the exchange rate.

Is the degree the same?

In most validated and franchised arrangements, you receive a degree from the UK university with the same title as students on the UK campus. Some certificates or transcripts state where you studied or name the partner college. For private employers and masters admissions abroad, the awarding university is what matters. For Lok Sewa and other public service jobs in Nepal, or for further study at a Nepali university, you may need an equivalence certificate from Tribhuvan University, so check how your degree will be treated before you enrol.

The Graduate Route needs study in the UK

The Graduate Route is open only to people who hold a UK Student visa and complete an eligible course in the UK. A UK degree earned entirely at a partner college in Nepal does not qualify, however good your results. The government has announced that the route will be shortened, so check its current length and conditions on gov.uk before planning around it.

Top-up and progression options

  • Final-year transfer: some partnerships let you complete the last year of the same degree on the UK campus, subject to grades, a Student visa and funds.
  • Top-up degree: if you hold an HND or a similar diploma, a one-year top-up in the UK leads to a full bachelors.
  • Masters in the UK: you complete the bachelors in Nepal, then take a one-year masters in the UK, the most common route to the Graduate Route for affiliated-college graduates.

Whichever you choose, the move to the UK needs a CAS, funds held for 28 days, a TB test from an approved clinic in Kathmandu and, for remitting fees, a MoEST No Objection Certificate.

How to verify a UK-affiliated college in Nepal

  1. 1Find the college on the UK university's own list of partner institutions, not just on the college's website or adverts.
  2. 2Confirm the exact award: degree title, awarding university, and whether it is a full degree, a top-up or a foundation pathway.
  3. 3Ask to see the college's current MoEST approval for this specific programme.
  4. 4Ask how the UK university moderates assessments and how often its staff visit.
  5. 5Talk to recent graduates about teaching quality and what they did next.

Which route should Nepali students choose?

  • Choose the affiliated college if cost is your main constraint, you plan to work in Nepal or the region, and you want UK-style coursework assessment and a UK award.
  • Choose the affiliated college plus a UK masters if you want UK work experience but your family cannot fund three years in the UK.
  • Choose a full degree in the UK if you want the full student experience and the longest time to build a UK network, and can fund three years of fees and living costs.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a UK degree earned in Nepal brings UK visa or work rights. It does not.
  • Enrolling in a pathway or diploma without realising it is not a full degree.
  • Comparing only the first-year fee instead of the full degree cost.
  • Not checking that the UK university still lists the college as a partner.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UK degree from a college in Nepal the same as one earned in the UK?

Usually the award is from the same UK university with the same title, although some certificates or transcripts mention the place of study. The main practical difference is that studying in Nepal gives you no UK immigration benefits such as the Graduate Route.

Can I get the UK Graduate Route after a UK-affiliated college in Nepal?

Not from the Nepal-based study. The Graduate Route requires a Student visa and an eligible course completed in the UK. Many affiliated-college graduates take a one-year masters in the UK to become eligible.

Is a UK-affiliated degree valid for government jobs in Nepal?

It may need an equivalence certificate from Tribhuvan University for Lok Sewa and some other purposes. Check how your specific degree is treated before you enrol.

How do I check that a UK-affiliated college in Nepal is genuine?

Check that the UK university lists the college as a partner on its own website, confirm the exact award, and ask for the college's current MoEST approval for the programme.
